New Year’s resolutions get such a bad rap:

“Do THIS and you will find HAPPINESS!”

“Start your New Year’s Resolutions to find your healthiest YOU!!”

“You get this chance one a YEAR. Make it COUNT!!!”

But this also puts undo pressure on ourselves: if you don’t set a goal, you won’t be happy; if you don’t start now, you won't get the body you’ve always wanted; please set this unattainable goal to hold self loathing over your head by the second week of January.

But, like, why???

You are ENOUGH, you are AWESOME and you can set a God damn goal whenever you want. But coming from someone who has lived in Souther California most of her life, and doesn’t look or feel like she has ever fit in to the SoCal girlie aesthetic, why make it body based? Make it feeling based. Make feeling better in your skin, kinder to yourself and small goal focused the real and kinder New Year’s Resolution.

Here is what I’ve done so far this year that has actually worked.

Make Weekly Goals

• Instead of focusing on the entire 365 days, I make weekly goals.

• Think: wake up at 6:30 am each week day, first screen of the day is the Peloton or do an at home facial everyday

  • {my goal was to use Ziip everyday and the rest are actual first week resolutions}

• If you slip already, you know that you are 1, human and 2, maybe made too lofty of a goal.

Write Them Down

This may seem obvious, but with some cute new pens and this journal that comes in every color that could possible make you happy {read: use it}, writing down your goals will keep you honest and organized.

Change it Weekly

One week, I said no phone after 7pm. While I was trying to watch out for myself, this resolution was difficult for me, so I haven’t done it sense. Also, one week a little cold worked its way through the house, so waking up at 6:30am daily wasn’t something that needed to be accomplished that week.

While I am using this post as encouragement to add back the “no phone after 7pm” resolution, making weekly goals make them attainable as well as give you space to grow and pivot for what is working and what isn’t.

Make Some Easy

They all don’t have to be an early wake up call, or some intense workout, or even cooking every night. Been wanting to take care of yourself? Add a daily 10 min meditation to the list or every other day whitening strips to your goals

It’s Never Too Late to start

While yes, I am aware that it is February and resolution season tends to hit the wall by the 12th of January, start now. Or next Monday! Or next Thursday!

Our society puts too much pressure on fresh starts and peer pressure of keeping up with what we see on social media. The main theme and reason for this post is to make it work for you. This is what works for me. And I truly look forward to each Monday with the chance to set new goals for the week ahead, shake off what didn’t work last week and feel accomplished by simply hoping for some time and attention on making myself better, stronger and kinder to me.

And Yes, one of my resolutions is to give this space and the blog more love, time and attention. So I sooooo appreciate you subscribing, sharing with your friends and being here.

Regardless of when your kids’ had Spring Break, my manifestation for everyone reading this, all 3 of you, is that you have an upcoming beach holiday planned sometime in the next 18 months. While I much prefer the mountains, there is something so therapeutic about being by or in the sea. That is great advice coming from me, who has lived by a beach most of my life and still have severe and crippling thalassophobia…

Regardless, here is what I packed for our Spring Break in the British Virgin Islands.

Swimsuits

• I always say that all you need for a bathing suit body is a body and a bathing suit. Same goes for a bikini. Being comfortable in your swim wear is so important. This new one piece had me not wanting to take it off at the end of the day. {more here}

• This one piece is also among the most flattering one pieces. I’ve seen it on all ages and all sizes and so chic yet functional. Get a solid color, white or black, and you are ready to be on a mega yatcht off the St. Tropez. Get your favorite print and you are ready to play mermaids in the resort pool until you prune all your fingers.

Coverups

• It baffles me that this simple idea, yet a nice thing to have when traveling, can be so expensive. This $32 coverup is my favorite and I even got stopped a couple times asking where I got it. Go up two sizes for the perfect oversized look.

• This is the only other one I packed as I like to have an option for sleeves to protect for any impending sunburn.

• this packable hat was a splurge for our last trip down here for a trip in February. But I’ve been on the year long search for a hat just like this. Instead of trying yet another find on Amazon, I thought I would splurge on this one, justifying it with two trips to the Caribbean, an upcoming Hawaiian trip and summer in San Diego. Again, a splurge, but it did not disappoint! The quality is amazing and I feel so boat chic wearing it, even with just a swim suit.

• I also packed a hat from our two favorite bars down here: Foxy’s and Soggy Dollar, both on Jost van Dyke.

Sunglasses

• While I enjoy designer shades as much as the next girlie, in recent years, I have found they just aren’t worth it. Not only are they the first ones to get lost, broken, scratched or stepped on, there are endless options that are just as functional and chic.

• All of that being said, I do justify the classic Ray-Bans. The aviator style fit under almost all baseball caps and they look good on every face and every age. The Wayfarer is also a classic shape with the same classifications as the aviators. I just got this updated version. Yet, I didn’t bring them as I didn’t want to drop, break, scratch or ruin them.

• These black classic shades were the first one I packed as they are dark, block out the sun well and already have some scratches on the. Yet, the price point is great, so if they end up at the bottom of the sea, I don’t totally lose sleep over it.

Sun Protection

• I was just recommended this sunscreen for the kids face as it light, meant for kids and easy to rub in. I’ve also been using it for my face and neck.

• Being a San Diego company, I always lean towards this brand. Plus is so easy to use. I leave these sticks all over the house and in bags, including the car, so the kids can apply to their faces before school drop off.

Extras

• I rarely travel, like anywhere, wearing all my diamonds. This trip I layered this ring with a simple band my husband gave me on our wedding day.

• body oil: so nice after a day in the sun. I get the travel size so I can bring it in my carry on.

The List (in order)

1. Denim Collar Top - so chic and timeless. I would style it with barrel jeans and ballet flats now and with denim shorts, layered over a tank in the warm months. Tie it around your shoulders when the morning chill warms up

2. Vine Print Nap Dress - I shared about this in this sub stack that this is the perfect dress: easy to pack and travel in, cute enough for the day, but the dark print would 100% work for a wedding or dressier event.

My swimsuit for our last full day {and for jumping off the Willy T’s with my nephews and daughter as seen on my Instagram {@navyandorange}.

When I first got this swimsuit, I loved both colors so much and was planning on keeping all four pieces. But the blue bottoms wouldn’t come in time for whatever trip that was for. So… I kept the green top and bottom, and blue top. Surprisingly though, this is the combo I wear most. But this is a great packing hack for future trips: get 3 pieces of a bikini set to mix and match for 2 looks with minimal packing.

Waiting for my decaf coffee, I found myself drooling. Not over the endless treats in the display case but over the lady in front of me’s outfit and handbag. This bag has been on my radar since about the first moment when I heard the term “quiet luxury” for the first time {and after seeing Courtney Grow share it on her stories….}. But the whole energy of the outfit was also from something I saw from scrolling: decide your outfit is cool. Decide you look great. Decide you like the way you look. The outfit was so simple {blue button down tucked into high waisted light wash black jeans with black flats, said bag in black and a black sweater over the shoulders}. So simple but so cool. I’m going to recreate asap.

We are heading on a beach vacation next month. Instead of panic shopping {and overpaying for the last minute overnight shipping} I’m trying to think and plan ahead. This chic one piece entered the chat. While it is available in limited sizing, I also ordered this timeless high waisted two piece and I find it so flattering and perfect.

We are currently experience quite the odd January weather in San Diego. So dry and windy yet surprisingly cold at the same time. Been using this Iced Latte on heavy rotation and also a surprise to me: that I have yet to lose it. These are also in every purse and pocket. Gummy Bear is my favorite.

I remember seeing a trend forcast of sneaker trends for 2025 on TikTok late last year. The creator said that Adidas sambas and gazelles wouldn’t be “trendy” but more of a staple {especially in black and white} but that these Gola sneakers would be the hot sneaker for end of winter/ early spring.

I love the idea of these cool pants for said beach vacation that we will taking in February and again in April. Quite out of my wheelhouse of smocked dresses and anything navy, but fashion is supposed to be fun, right?!

National tragedy is nothing new. Especially if you are of my age and was a teenager on September 11th, remember the economic meltdown of 2003 and 2008, raising young children during Covid… the list goes on and on. There have been countless Southern California and global fires, countless effects of climate change and the destruction. I mean, not too long ago California was on hurricane watch. In California!

Either way, this one hits close to home. Not only are the fires literally up the road {about two hours} but they say that this drought will bring something similar to San Diego before summer.

So, it seems strange to just continue business as usual with links in my IG stories, online shopping and spring 2025 trends. While I will get back to a couple posts I have scheduled, not only for content but also as a break from the doomsday news cycle, I wanted to acknowledge this tragedy.

• Please keep in mind to have the clothes you are donating organized, very lightly used, clean and appropriate {read: no tube tops, your old going out tops or what you wore to Coachella 3 years ago needed}.

• NEW socks and underwear

• CLEAN non soiled kids and baby clothes, organized and labeled.

Where I Donated

• The kids’ school has a very organized and specific donation drive where they will be making individualized care packages. So I donated 10+ rolls of paper towels, toothbrushes, toothpaste, kids flossers, 20+ bars of soap, packaged non perishable snacks, granola, children Tylenol, etc. etc.

Every year, I say I'm not shopping Black Friday much less posting about it. And every year I can't stay away.

As a family, we do less and less gifts for each other year after year, so this week, I will be just shopping for my nieces and nephews. But I've have some fun shopping for yours truly this last weekend. Here is what I honestly bought/ have purchased in the past and would 10/10 recommend.

• Frontgate: new towels for our primary bathroom. The kids still currently shower and brush teeth in our bathroom {love all the silly and quality time together}, so I just got another set of these bath sheets that feel like you are at a luxury hotel. Also, so much great holiday decor on sale.

• Ring Concierge: this year, I got a gift for an upcoming big birthday of a friend. But most of my day to day items are from here, including the pinky ring I wear every single day, the tennis bracelet that was given to me from my husband for our 10th year anniversary, this mini tennis bracelet, this diamond wrap ring and the tennis necklace my husband got me for my 40th. {this might be a last minute purchase today for me in my stocking, from me... trying to decide between yellow and white gold.}

• Serena & Lily: of course use this as a reason to get any furniture you've been eyeing. But I tend to tell people to get their sheets. They are great quality, feel luxurious and seem a little over budget not on sale.

• J.Crew: shop anything you need, but if this isn't in budget at the moment, they constantly have other random sales. I did get this jacket for me for under $90 and I'm very excited about it. 0% chance of it making it under the tree. Also a great retailer for easy gifts for brothers in law, aunts, mother's in laws or coworkers as their gift guide tends to cover all bases. omg this is too cute and festive and $63.

• Shopbop: I didn't take advantage of their recent fall sale, so I used Black Friday to get some cute items, including these studded Mary Janes that I have had my eye on for about a year.

• Hill House Home: great great items for any lady on your list. 30% off a classic dress that I constantly wear and constantly get compliments on. Wore this for Thanksgiving and got stopped in my tracks at Thanksgiving dinner from a fellow mom asking for outfit details. From kids pjs, to mini stuffed animals, hair bows and headbands and the perfect party dress that seriously work for the grocery store to parties. I got this today for me, again....

• Abercrombie: always great for fall items and great for any tweens on your list. And don't sleep on the men's section for any ladies on your list, including you. Been loving all their men's jackets lately.
